In a move aimed at revamping Nigeria’s Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the termination of Dr Ferdinand Giadom’s appointment as the Project Coordinator. The president has named Prof. Nanibarini Zabbey as the new Project Coordinator of HYPREP with immediate effect.
Prof. Nanibarini Zabbey is a renowned Ogoni expert in hydrobiology and has extensive experience and background in remediation-related activities, with a focus on bio-monitoring and restoration ecology. Until his appointment, he was a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Port Harcourt.
The new HYPREP Coordinator is also the first African recipient of the Association of the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) 2022 Ruth Patrick Award for research and engagement with a critical impact on the recovery of the Niger Delta ecosystem from oil spills and environmental justice for affected communities.
This appointment is expected to bring a renewed focus on the remediation efforts in the Niger Delta region and ensure that the affected communities receive the justice and restoration they deserve.
