The resumption of ticket sales for commercial tricycle operators, locally known as Keke riders, has sparked fury among the residents of Uvwvie Local Government Area in Delta State. Today, chaos engulfed the streets as irate Keke riders staged a peaceful but vehement protest, bringing vehicular movement to a grinding halt near Airport Junction and Effurun Roundabout.
Expressing their discontent, one protester, speaking to Oghwoghwa Reporters, criticized the State Government led by Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Francis Oborevwori for allegedly failing to provide prior notice regarding the reinstatement of ticket sales.
The former governor of Delta State, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa suspended these sales, in the lead-up to the 2023 General Elections, making the sudden resurgence a flashpoint for their anger. Moreover, the absence of a formal announcement or a delay until next year for the ticket sales added to their grievances.
Adding fuel to the fire, protesters questioned the selective implementation of this policy, highlighting the discrepancy as Uvwvie resumed ticket sales while neighboring Udu and Warri South Local Government Areas remained exempt from such measures.
Efforts to obtain a response from the Uvwvie Local Government Council Chairman, Honorable Ramson Tega Onoyake, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
As the reinstatement of tricycle ticket sales ignited a fierce backlash within Uvwvie, raising concerns over transparency, timing, and the apparent discrepancy in its enforcement, residents eagerly await an official response from the State and local authorities to quell the growing unrest.
