In a grand ceremony held at Shell RA Field, Ogunu, Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State, His Royal Majesty Kingsley Emakpo Orereh, Ataneru Igbi II, was formally presented with the staff of office by His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Francis Oborevwori. The event, which took place on June 21, 2024, was a celebration of the rich heritage and traditions of the Agbarha-Warri Kingdom.
The presentation ceremony began with the traditional offering of kolanuts, symbolizing peace and hospitality. High Chief Willie Atebefia, Chairman of the Council of Chiefs, welcomed the attendees, highlighting the significance of the occasion. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the dignitaries and guests, acknowledging the pivotal roles played by various personalities in achieving this milestone.
In his address, Governor Oborevwori, represented by Chief John Onyeme, FCA, emphasized the importance of security within the kingdom. He tasked the newly enthroned monarch with prioritizing the safety and well-being of his people, ensuring a harmonious and prosperous reign, adding that “the people of Agbarha Warri Kingdom has a long history of good neighbourliness, peace and love both amongst themselves and other inhabitants.
“I appeal to you to take issues bothering on security very seriously. Accord His Royal Majesty all the respect and loyalty that his office demands. I urge all of you to be sincere and transparently honest in all your dealings with His Royal Majesty and extend every nerve assistance and cooperation to him to lighten the burden of his office”, he further said.
High Chief Willie Atebefia praised His Royal Majesty as a vibrant young leader, poised to elevate the Agbarha Warri Kingdom to new heights. He commended the monarch’s peaceful nature and dedication to the kingdom’s progress, aligning with the state’s M.O.R.E agenda.
The highlight of the event was the formal presentation of the staff of office. This symbolic act was a reaffirmation of HRM Kingsley Emakpo Orereh’s authority and his commitment to serving his people. His Royal Majesty expressed deep appreciation to the state government and all who contributed to the success of the occasion.
“I, His Royal Majesty Ataneru Igbi II, Ovie of Agbarha Warri Kingdom, extend my heartfelt appreciation to His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State, and his Deputy Sir Monday Onyeme, for their unwavering support and efforts in the presentation of my staff of office,” he said. “Your dedication to our kingdom’s heritage and traditions is truly commendable. Thank you for your leadership and commitment to our kingdom’s progress.”
The ceremony was adorned with traditional and cultural performances, including vibrant dances by the Ema Dance Troupe, Chief Barrister Smooth, Solo King, Stereo Man and many others. The event exuded grandeur and splendor, with the attendance of government functionaries, traditional rulers, town unions, and ethnic groups.
The Agbarha Warri Kingdom, consisting of seven towns and numerous villages, has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. The kingdom’s identity and autonomy have been consistently asserted, with significant treaties signed with the British Colonial Government in the late 19th century. The transition from a gerontocracy to a monarchy in 1998 marked a new era, culminating in the enthronement of HRM Kingsley Emakpo Orereh, Igbi II, on December 5, 2023.
The presentation of the staff of office to Ataneru Igbi II is a testament to the enduring legacy and vibrant future of the Agbarha Warri Kingdom.
