Idjerhe, Delta State, Nigeria
His Majesty, King Obukowho Monday Whiskey, Ph.D., Udurhie 1, Ovie of the Great Idjerhe Kingdom, has issued a heartfelt appeal to Nigerian youths, urging them to reconsider the planned nationwide hunger protest. Expressing deep concern over the potential repercussions, the respected traditional ruler emphasized that such a protest could lead to further national disorder and economic instability.
In his address, King Whiskey acknowledged the severe hunger and insecurity plaguing the nation, urging a more constructive approach to addressing these issues rather than resorting to mass protests. He underscored the constitutional right of every Nigerian to protest but highlighted the risks involved, given the current socio-economic climate.
“As a revered traditional ruler and a veteran journalist with over three decades of experience, I recognize the challenges we face, including hunger, insecurity, and unemployment,” King Whiskey stated. “However, another nationwide protest could plunge our nation into more economic turmoil and insecurity.”
Appealing to the youths as a father figure, King Whiskey earnestly called for the planned protest to be shelved in the interest of national unity and stability. He also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the concerns raised by the youths, particularly focusing on hunger and the disconnect between ordinary Nigerians and the ruling class.
“We cannot afford another #ENDSARS unrest now,” he cautioned. “Our collective decision to work for sustainable peace by addressing growing insecurities should be our top national discourse. Mass protests should not be provoked as an option to address the needs of the masses.”
King Whiskey emphasized that peace and dialogue remain the most viable solutions, warning that mass protests can easily be hijacked by those with malicious intentions. He reiterated his commitment to advocating for job creation, revitalizing the agricultural sector, and building a prosperous nation for Nigerian youths.
“I appeal to all Nigerian youths, particularly those in the Niger Delta, to engage in dialogue with the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, prioritizing national interest,” King Whiskey concluded.
His Majesty’s appeal is a call for unity and constructive action, urging the youth to collaborate with the government to address the pressing issues of hunger and insecurity, and to work towards a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
