Warri, Delta State – The 3rd Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) Warri Public Service Awards took center stage at the Government House Annex, Edjeba, Agbarha Warri Kingdom, on Thursday, November 28, 2024. Themed “Celebrating Philanthropy, Excellence, and Humanity,” the event honored remarkable individuals and organizations whose contributions to public service, excellence, and humanitarian efforts have transformed lives and communities.
Among the distinguished awardees was Rev. Thomas I. Ukwute, General Overseer of Anchor of Hope Ministries and founder of the Oasis of Hope Initiative. He was celebrated for his humanitarian contributions through Project Hope, which has equipped over 725 youths with skills and startup support, reducing unemployment and fostering economic growth in the region. Alongside his supportive wife, Pastor Mrs. Gladys Ukwute, Ukwute has used his inspirational Hope for the Nation broadcasts and extensive ministry work to touch countless lives globally.
In his acceptance remarks, Ukwute emphasized the importance of building broken lives with the love of God. He stated, “In a world filled with despair, our mission as believers is to be beacons of light, offering hope and restoration to those who have lost their way.” He elaborated on the divine mandate that birthed Project Hope, underscoring its role in equipping young people with practical skills to break free from the cycle of poverty. “Every life we touch, every skill we impart, is a seed sown for the future of our community and our nation,” Ukwute added. He also acknowledged the dedication of his team and partners at the Oasis of Hope Initiative, declaring, “Let us rise to the call of service, knowing that even the smallest act of kindness can spark a ripple of hope that transforms generations.”
Another notable honoree was Olorogun Austin Akpotu Emaduku, MNIM, FHNR, FCPA, who received accolades for administrative excellence and leadership. As President of the College of Heads of Personnel Management and Treasurers to Local Governments in Delta State, Emaduku has championed initiatives such as education programs for displaced persons and flood disaster management efforts, which have left an indelible mark on the region.
Olorogun Wanda (Oskar) Ibru, founder of PATHWAYS (Practical African Hospitality WAYS), was celebrated for her contributions to youth empowerment in the tourism and hospitality sectors. Since 2012, PATHWAYS has provided free tuition and training through its state-of-the-art center in Agbarha-Otor, creating hundreds of employment opportunities. The organization’s botanical garden and specialized library further promote skill development and environmental conservation.
Prof. Rukevwe Ugwumba, Associate Professor at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, and founder of the Jesu-Marie Empowerment Foundation, received recognition for her dedication to healthcare and community empowerment. Her foundation provides education, skills training, and healthcare access to underserved communities.
The list of honorees also included HRM Joseph Timiyan, Ebenanaowei of Ogulagha Kingdom; Hon. Ndudi Elumelu; Prof. Ben Oghojafor, Vice Chancellor of Dennis Osadebey University; Pemetrac Machinery Investment Ltd; ND Western; and several others who have significantly impacted their respective fields.
The event’s chairperson, Hon. Chief P.Y. Bjakpara, praised the awardees for their exceptional contributions to public service and humanity. In his remarks, he noted, “These awards highlight the extraordinary efforts of individuals and organizations that shape our communities. They remind us of the power of service, innovation, and humanity.”
The ceremony was graced by the presence of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Executive Governor of Delta State, represented by Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, Commissioner for Information. HRM Igbu II, Ovie of Agbarha Warri Kingdom, represented by Chiefs Egbedi Jackson and Richard Okoro, served as the Royal Father of the Day.
Chief Moses Odibo, Chairman of the DBS Board of Directors, delivered a reflective speech on the transformative power of media in society. Deacon Malcolm Oteri, General Manager of DBS Warri, announced ongoing rebranding and digitization efforts at the station, supported by the Delta State Government.
A highlight of the evening was a talk by Chief Francis Okumagba, titled “How to Create Wealth from Nothing in These Challenging Times.” In his engaging presentation, Okumagba emphasized that wealth creation starts with a mindset shift, likening the pursuit of wealth to the way a man woos a woman, and underscoring that generosity attracts abundance. He shared practical strategies, including how to generate a million naira within a month, leaving the audience inspired.
The evening concluded with a renewed commitment to public service, philanthropy, and innovation. As the awards came to a close, attendees left with a shared sense of purpose, inspired to continue making a positive impact in their communities.
